Currently, if an equipment maintenance line item, (such as an oil change), is recorded and the cost for the service is entered as well, that expense is also added onto the expenses page within the software. This is good sometimes, but not always. If I have the mower serviced for $250 at the dealer, then record an equipment maintenance item with the total cost, and that is added to the expense page and therefore the P&L, that's fine. But my situation is different. I bought the supplies to do an oil change, and then did it myself. I would like to track that initial cost of 12 qt. of oil in the expense page and assign a vendor/supplier to that purchase. (That way I know when, where and who I bought the oil from.) Then within the equipment maintenance log, enter in the exact price for the amount of oil, filter, etc., and total cost, that I actually used in one oil change. I don't want this now to appear a second time in the expense page, and therefore throw off the P&L.
In other words, when logging an equipment maintenance item, there just needs to be a quick toggle, dropdown, multiple choice or something that says: "Add expense to expense page" (good for flat price from dealer). Or: "Keep as separate from expense page" (only for totaling or seeing individual costs associated with one piece of equipment.)
I will be switching over to QuickBooks soon but would like to have this straightened out first so that I can have a clean slate to start QuickBooks with.
Also, one other quick thing.
There is no category of "Return/Refund" within the expenses page. So, if I return a part, I could select the category "Return" and then link it some way (probably some number system) to the original expense and therefore keep an accurate running total.
These are just a few small things that would really help me right now since I am just starting out and would like to get all my records done within HomeWorks. Thanks HomeWorks team, I really appreciate the customer service!
